Why Does a Custom-fitted Chinrest Make Such a Difference?
We believe that the reason lies in the chinrest's effect on each of the major areas of possible injury: head position, neck position, and the height of the shoulders. Players with custom-fitted chinrests can find balance when each of these areas releases from clamping, incorrect position, or restricted movement. Injuries due to lack of balance and correct body use can finally be turned around or avoided.
We now understand, that very often, players had no idea that their equipment was causing unbalanced bodies when playing that carried through into day-to-day life. With the use of a good-fitting chinrest and through the use of Paul Rolland movement pedagogy, players understood what movements to look for in their playing and how to identify incorrect movements or the lack of movement. The Frisch and Denig chinrest allowed freedom of movement.
Also, we have made players aware that congenital problems were being compounded by playing on incorrect equipment. This gave us the opportunity to point players to physical therapists and Alexander Technique specialists around us. Sometimes, these postural issues needed to be dealt with first before new equipment could even be spoken of. Literally, there were tears of relief for those who finally found out the sources of their problems and that they would not have to give up playing.
